The Power of “Yet” “One of the key buzzwords in education right now is Growth Mindset, a concept developed by Carol Dweck. There are two types of “mindsets” – a fixed mindset and a growth mindset. When people have fixed mindsets, they believe that their level of intelligence. or of talent, cannot be changed. But when people have growth mindsets, they believe that their qualities can change with persistence and hard work. One neat way of instilling this concept is adding the word, “Yet”. For instance, “I am not a good skier… yet.” This acknowledges I have room to grow, but also shows that I am empowered to learn. This concept also helps to overcome anxiety, fear and perfectionism. At EKES, we are fostering this idea. One key way we are fostering the Growth Mindset in our students is in our conversations. As a parent, what kinds of feedback do you give your child? Instead of saying, “You are a good baseball player!” considering saying, “You are a hard worker” or “I like how you keep trying to learn more in baseball.” Let’s empower our kids to learn and grow!
